Appropriation as a System of Value Production—Erik Brunetti’s Conceptual Practice Across Art, Commerce & Law

Erik Brunetti’s four-decade practice examines how recognizable visual forms accumulate authorship, authority, ownership, and value as their meanings are repeatedly transformed through public use, reproduction, recontextualization, and institutional interpretation.

Cultural Capital Structure—Asset Stratification, Liquidity & the Architecture of Price

Erik Brunetti’s Oval Parody provides a clear case for examining how a shared graphic genealogy becomes distributed across materially distinct objects and how those distinctions enter later processes of valuation.

Image Credibility After Generative AI—How the Erosion of Presumptive Trust Reconfigured the Epistemic Conditions of Visual Media Interpretation

Generative AI has accelerated the dismantling of presumptive trust in visual media. As fabrication costs have fallen below verification costs, audiences have shifted from passive acceptance to hypercritical forensic scrutiny. This marks a profound reordering of image perception in the digital age.

Before the Catalogue Raisonné—Evidence, Fragmentation & the Reconstruction of Artistic Histories

Artistic history emerges through the reconstruction of dispersed evidence across archives, collections, markets, and publications. Framing the archive as a distributed network clarifies how cultural continuity is preserved across fragmented systems of documentation.

Prestige Arbitrage in Contemporary Culture––Significance & the Institutional Logic of Value

As visibility becomes increasingly mistaken for significance, contemporary culture risks confusing recognition with importance itself. This essay examines provenance, cultural memory, institutional validation, and the uncertain interval between cultural emergence and historical consensus.

Mastery Beyond Visibility—On Skill, Material Knowledge & the Formation of Artistic Judgment

An examination of how artistic judgment emerges through sustained practice, material engagement, technical development, and prolonged encounters with the realities of making.

Field Conditions in Far West Texas––On Cultural Mythology, Informal Networks & the Production of Place

Marfa emerged from a series of contradictions: isolation and visibility, resistance and commodification, artistic experimentation and cultural tourism. What began as Donald Judd's withdrawal from established art centers evolved into an economy of cultural visibility and symbolic capital.

Notes On The Edition Process––Tonal Architecture & Screen Separation

The silkscreen editions derived from Erik Brunetti’s ink drawings are often perceived initially as monochromatic works, though their production methodology is considerably more complex than a conventional black-and-white screenprint reproduction.

Oval Parody—Graphic Memory, Mechanical Reproduction & the Evolution of an Icon

In 2022, Erik Brunetti returned to a core symbol from his practice: the oval form that first appeared in his FUCT graphics in the early 1990s. The resulting body of work — Oval Parody— consists of twelve acrylic paintings on canvas.

Recursive Authenticity & the New Legitimacy Economy

Contemporary legitimacy increasingly operates through recursive systems in which institutions acknowledge the constructed nature of visibility while continuing to depend upon it. This article examines branding, symbolic circulation, and authenticity under contemporary media conditions.
